CAPE TOWN - A fire has destroyed scores of homes in the Taiwan informal settlement, in Khayelitsha.

It's not yet clear what caused the blaze that broke out on Sunday.

Gift of the Givers teams were called out by the local councillor and community leaders to assist the affected residents.

The humanitarian aid organisation's Ali Sablay: "Our teams were on site to do assessments but could not do much as strong winds exacerbated the fire. All credit due to the City of Cape Town fire department who worked under difficult circumstances, with wind and narrow spaces to move through, they managed to contain the blaze. We could not do much humanitarian assistance last night, as it was still an active site."

Sablay said that teams would return to the community on Monday morning.
