CAPE TOWN - The 2024 National Senior Certificate exams are officially underway.

More than 800,000 matrics across the country are sitting down to write on Monday morning.

The Western Cape has 75,647 candidates sitting for exams.

Grade 12 learner at Abbotts College in Rondebosch, Connor Muller, said the exams were important because they're the gateway to university.

"I do feel prepared but with regards to big subjects, study subjects, I feel I didn't study more. But overall, I do feel I'm prepared for the exams."

Muller admitted that he was nervous.

"I never know what to expect from these finals. I heard some say that these finals are easier than the prelims. I don't want to believe that otherwise, I'll just get my hopes up. The best thing I can do right now is study and learn a lot," said Muller.

Meanwhile, grade 12 learner at Rhenish Girls' High School, Anesu Dzama, shared her thoughts and feeling with Eyewitness News.

"I feel like I'm very prepared. My teachers definitely put so much effort into our group to prepare us and I'm feeling quite calm actually."

Dzama says being on the brink of finishing her schooling career, is bitter-sweet.

"I'm feeling quite excited. Obviously it is bitter-sweet, because we are leaving behind five years of high school and the memories and some of the people that we see every day, we won't be seeing them next year, you know people are starting their new chapters... it's definitely a big change to adapt to."
