Since then, he's been remembered by business titans and political leaders as instrumental in stabilising the country's economy and charting crucial labour policy.
His loved ones have also hailed him as principled, and as a family man.
"For the past few evenings, I have found myself sitting outside in the depths of the night trying to write a speech that perfectly encapsulates my father. But I could never overcome this simple question – how do you write a finite speech about someone whose legacy and impact is timeless?" said Mboweni's son, Sello.
Sellos said his father's life was well lived.
"My father was a man who took life’s punches with reliance and humour. He was never one to dwell on the past or have regrets. I think that is one of the best lessons he has left us with."
