Two workers dead, three rescued from manhole in Joburg CBD

JOHANNESBURG - Two contract workers trapped in a manhole in the Johannesburg CBD have died.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) confirmed that another three workers were successfully rescued and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Joburg EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba said it's believed the workers may have succumbed to fumes from a generator being used underground.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
Meanwhile, the public is urged to steer clear of the area as operations continue.
