Anele and The Club talk about the price tag that comes with your kids’ activities.
Listen below.
While extra mural activities are a fun and positive way to keep your kid busy and engaged, the bills involved can sometimes pile up.
This is the case for listener Kevin:
"My daughter has a ballet concert coming up next month. So, we pay for ballet as an extramural every month. Now the ballet concert has an entry fee of R240, a costume hire fee of R240, a graduation pack for R120, and the cherry on top is that we also have to pay R150 per person to attend the concert. So, this concert is costing me almost a grand, and her only performance is a song that is one minute and 10 seconds long. I don't feel we should pay to also watch the show, come on now."
- Kevin
So, should Kevin foot the bill? Johannesburg and the team share their thoughts…
“I am a nursey school owner and I am telling Kevin that he is really just being pulled through the ringer here and really being taken advantage of… parents already pay so much in school fees.”
– Caller
“I can understand everything but I wouldn’t charge the parents to watch the concert… It’s a lot, it can be heavy on parents.”
– Anele Mdoda
“We’ve already seen the concert; you know your daughter’s been practicing, dancing that little routine at home… This is daylight robbery.”
– Franke du Toit
“I am in that exact same situation. Why must I pay R500 for a concert fee and then I must buy a ticket as well to watch this concert? Then I must also do the makeup and everything on the morning of this concert?”
– Caller
“Financially my heart aches every single month. In total, I pay R1500 for soccer and karate. Apart from that, we pay a [yearly] registration fee, monthly fees, we pay for the karate outfits, we pay for our children’s grading, we pay for tournaments and we have to sacrifice all of our time to attend every event… They’re only going to their yellow belt.”
– Caller
“We have two little girls (four and five) and they’re doing ballet. There is a registration fee per child, we pay R750 per term, they had an assessment last month in which we had to pay R350 per child, there was specific attire that costs R520 per child and a supplier that you had to buy the shoes and stockings from… We also had to pay an entrance fee to watch our child be assessed.”
