CAPE TOWN - A 19-year-old suspect implicated in the murder of a Stellenbosch University student is expected to make his first appearance in the local magistrates court on Friday.
The first-year BSc student was found by a security guard with a stab wound to the neck in Borcherd Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The victim was reportedly killed on his 19th birthday.
The suspect, due to make his first appearance in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court on Friday, was taken into police custody just hours after the fatal stabbing.
On Thursday, Stellenbosch Crime Prevention officials arrested three more suspects, two men and a woman, in the Cloetesville area.
The police's Malcolm Pojie said they would appear in court once charged.
"The 19-yea-old first-year student was robbed and stabbed on Wednesday, 16 October 2024 in the early morning hours at about 03:00. The victim was riding his bicycle down Borcherd Street, when he was accosted, stabbed in the neck and robbed of his personal belongings."
Stellenbosch University said that the attack had left the campus community in shock and has encouraged students in need of counselling to contact the institution's 24-hour crisis service.
