CAPE TOWN - The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs portfolio committee's chairperson, Zweli Kkhize, has urged political parties to appoint more competent councillors.
Mkhize made the when the committee discussed the South African Local Government Association (SALGA)'s annual report and the quality of councillors on Friday.
"But could they amongst their own leaders choose people with one, two or three criteria for purposes of ease of operation when they are at the municipal level as a councillor," said Mkhize.
Mkhize also said communities must be influenced to elect people they know are qualified for their benefit.
"We need to be influencing communities to say at least bring us people who can operate at this level of academic educational level so that effectiveness can be improved," he added.
