CAPE TOWN - The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is on a drive to help students stock up on basic food supplies.
Together with a few partners, the university said they wanted to ensure that no student on campus writes their final exams on an empty stomach.
The initiative was launched on 17 October on World Food Day.
UWC said essential food items would be handed out to students over the final exam period in a discreet and dignified manner.
Some of the brands that supported the institution's initiative include Shoprite, Tiger Brands, Woolworths, The Fix, and the Gift of the Givers.
UWC spokesperson Gasant Abarder said: "This is a national problem of food insecurity amongst students on campuses all over our country. You know the adage that you can't teach a hungry student."
The university added that the food drive over the exam period would ensure that students get access to nutrition while they’re on their path to success.
