SIU achieves record R8 billion fund recovery: 'We're hitting them where it hurts!'

In the 2023/24 financial year, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) 'saved' the South African government (i.e. taxpayers) approximately R8 billion.
Mothibi says that this achievement is a result of thorough investigations, prompt legal action, and efficient recovery processes.

The SIU achieved a historic cash recovery of R2.28 billion, the highest in its 27-year history.
Additionally, the unit prevented potential state losses of R2.32 billion and secured R1.6 billion in cash recoveries through debt acknowledgements and liability admissions.

Mothibi highlights that Transnet recoveries amounted to R710 million, R500 million from Eskom, and the NSFAS investigation totalled R191 million by the end of the 2023/24 financial year.
He emphasises that while the recoveries are significant and essential, it is crucial that prosecutions follow.
