SAPS to focus on extortion, kidnappings and gang-related crimes over festive season

CAPE TOWN - Extortion, kidnapping, and gang-related violence will remain a priority for the police this festive season.
On Thursday, the South African Police Service (SAPS)'s top brass launched the Western Cape Safer Festive Season Campaign in Mitchells Plain.
Nine crime focus areas have been identified, including clamping down on gender-based violence, drugs, and drunk driving among others.
The National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the festive season crime strategy will be implemented across all provinces.

Masemola said they've had numerous successes clamping down on extortion-related crimes and hunting down violent criminals.
"One of the focus areas is extortion, and we will continue arresting them and those that challenge us we are also ready to take them on," he said.
Masemola said the collaboration between all law enforcement agencies in the Western Cape is encouraging.
