Buying alcohol was previously a big no-no on Sundays but laws have since changed.

While the law makes provisions for Sundays, it is still with specific conditions.

Speaking to Anele and The Club (on 947), Cleo Bodibe-Lushaba, Director of Client Relations Management at the Gauteng Liquor Board says each province has its own laws.

In Gauteng, the regulations permit establishments to sell alcohol on Sundays subject to a time.

Retailers are allowed to sell alcohol from 8 am to 3.30 pm.

This is related to off-consumption, where you buy alcohol at the shop and consume it off the premises.

“If you were at a restaurant or a tavern, you would still be able to access alcohol later than 3.30 pm.”

“Gauteng is the economic hub. You would find Sundays are those busy days when liquor traders look forward to making more money, it's their peak time… there is economic activity on a Sunday.”
- Cleo Bodibe-Lushaba, Gauteng Liquour Board
“Liquor traders did suffer a lot during Covid-19, so when we [the economy] opened up again we had to make up that business… this is one of the ways we can help liquor traders.”

She adds that liquor licences and their conditions are still highly criticised.

Several establishments that can sell liquor late at night are often not in residential areas.
