JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) says it asked Danny Thupane to resign as Mogale City mayor as it didn’t want to “embarrass” him by removing him through a motion of no confidence.
Thupane, a councillor of the African Transformation Movement (ATM), resigned as mayor on Wednesday ahead of a motion on his fitness to hold office.
He was elected mayor in April last year with backing from the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) caucuses.
There were three motions of no confidence tabled in the Mogale city council on Wednesday.
One against the mayor, the speaker and the chief whip.
The mayor resigned before his motion could be voted on while the ANC and EFF used their majority in council to beat the other two motions.
ANC regional secretary, Mkhuseli Jokazi said a new arrangement has been made over the governance of Mogale City.
“In terms of the principles of the Government of National Unity (GNU), there is an agreement that the party with the majority must take over the municipality, that’s the agreement they agreed upon at GNU level. The mayor had to be approached to resign so that he is not embarrassed by the motion of no confidence.”
Jokazi said discussions were underway to form a new executive government in the West Rand municipality.
