JOHANNESBURG - Former Finance Minister and Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni is set to be laid to rest on Saturday.

Mboweni died at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg this past weekend, following a short illness.

The 65-year-old has been celebrated in the political, labour and business communities for his significant contributions to labour, fiscal and monetary policies.

The Mboweni family and a select few friends gathered at his Killarney home on Monday night for a prayer session where words of comfort were shared.

It’s the first of three private prayer evenings before his final send-off.

Still reeling from his death, some of Mboweni’s relatives said this would be a bitter new reality to come to grips with.

Longtime friend and neighbour, former Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu was among the mourners at the former minister’s home.

She said Mboweni would go down as one of the greats.

"He served his part very well and for some of us who have seen him in action, we can say confidently that he did everything he could to serve the people of South Africa."

Mboweni’s funeral service is expected to be held in his hometown in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
