JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC)’s heavyweights have gathered at former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s home in Killarney to pay their respects.

Mboweni died at Milpark Hospital on Saturday, following a short illness.

Since then - the political and business communities have mourned Mboweni as an exceptional leader.

The ANC’s Secretary-General – Fikile Mbalula – led a delegation of the liberation movement’s leader who went to console the family of a man who spent most of his life in public service.

Mboweni joined the ANC in 1985 - in exile.

In 1997 - he was appointed as the ANC’s head of policy department, managing policy processes.

Mbalula said Mboweni will be remembered for his work in the Reconstruction Development programme in the early days of ANC governance and the Growth, Employment, and Redistribution (GEAR) project - which laid the foundation for economic recovery.

Mboweni will be accorded a State funeral, said Mbalula, although it will be up to the office of The Presidency to confirm the category.
