CAPE TOWN - Runners from across South Africa and abroad will descend on the Mother City for this weekend's Cape Town Sanlam Marathon.

The marathon will be run on Sunday, 20 October but the event will also see a 5km and 10km Peace Run and trail runs on Saturday, 19 October.

Several road closures will affect various parts of the CBD over the weekend.

Parking restrictions will also be in place as the Cape Town Sanlam Marathon adheres to the requirements needed to become an Abbott World Marathon Majors event. London, Berlin, Tokyo, New York, Chicago and Boston are the other city marathons that have major status. One of the requirements is that there should be no parked cars along the entire route. For this weekend's Cape Town Marathon, cars parked in restricted areas will be towed.

No public or street parking is available in Green Point, Sea Point or Mouille Point and the race organiser has appealed to runners to only use the Park and Ride or Park and Walk (available at registration) services to get to and from the venue Race Village on the race days.
