JOHANNESBURG - In a horrific shooting at the Mokokotlong informal settlement in Orange Farm, seven people, including a 3-year-old boy, were killed early Sunday morning.
The attack unfolded after an altercation at a local tavern when a man, frustrated by the tavern's closure, argued with the owner.
The tavern owner allegedly followed the man home, where a family was celebrating lobola negotiations.
He opened fire, killing five family members, a neighbour, and a friend.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridilli said four others survived.
“Four people survived the shooting, but a one-year-old and 31-year-old sustained injuries. They are being treated in hospital. The suspect then returned to his home in Evaton and turned the gun on himself. The provincial serious and violent crimes unit is investigating seven counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, and an inquest.”
