CAPE TOWN - Hikers are being warned to take extra care, as hotter conditions are expected this summer.

In two of them, lost hikers were guided from Table Mountain and a hiker who collapsed had to be flown from Lion's Head.

The weather office has predicted higher-than-average temperatures in 2024.

Outdoor enthusiasts are urged to take safety tips seriously, like getting an early start, dressing appropriately, and carrying enough water.

Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson David Nel said: "Just to stand on some of these trails and see the footwear that some people are using when entering the park, I think our message here is just use appropriate footwear - closed shoes. Those worn-out takkies that you had for 15 years may not be the most appropriate footwear, as are high heels and flip flops."
