JOHANNESBURG - The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has recommended candidates with a wide range of expertise to be appointed as judges in Gauteng’s courts.
Nine people were interviewed on Thursday for six posts.
The JSC will recommend its preferred candidates to President Cyril Ramaphosa for appointment.
Professor Wilhemina du Plessis was one of two academics to be interviewed and secured recommendation in her very first appearance before the JSC after receiving compliments from commissioners on her work as an acting judge.
The commission also recommended Senior Counsel Advocate Etienne Labuschagne, who has been practising as a lawyer for 36 years.
Justice Mandisa Maya thanked Labuschagne for appearing before the commission, saying it is rare for top lawyers to avail themselves for the bench.
"We hope this encourages our top lawyers – especially the Black ones – to make themselves available for the bench. We know the pay is poor, but we are drowning – we need our good people."
Meanwhile, the other appointments include Advocate Shaida Mohamed, Senior Magistrate Mudunwazi Makamu, Senior Counsel Advocate Richard Mkhabela, and Labour Judge Graham Moshoana.
