JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Health in Gauteng has called for vigilance after more than 70 matric pupils were treated for suspected food poisoning.

The teenagers, from three different schools in Carltonville, were at a study camp at Fochville Secondary School when they fell ill on Thursday.

They were treated in hospital and released.

The grade 12 learners from Fochville Secondary School, Badirile Secondary School, and Wedela Technical School were at a matric camp ahead of exams at Fochville Secondary School when they fell ill.

They were rushed to hospital, where they received treatment.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said it was now up to investigators to determine what led to the incident.

"It's more a question of the food preparation – how the food was prepared and all of those things. I think those are the questions the people on the ground investigating will ask in terms of the people who were contracted to provide the catering and how they prepared the food and all those things."

This latest incident marks a third in less than a week.

On Sunday, five children from Naledi, Soweto, died after allegedly eating snacks bought from foreign-owned spaza shops.

The Department of Health said the rise in incidents of this nature was concerning.
