LUSIKISIKI - The family of one of the victims of the Lusikisiki massacre said that she had to drop out of school due to crime.

Ruth King's funeral service was held on Friday. 

She was among the 18 people who were attacked during a family gathering in Lusikisiki late in September.

With a number of community members gathered for King's final send-off, her uncle David Kng took to the podium to speak about his niece.

He told mourners that she loved education and had to come back home after she and her roommates were attacked by criminals.

"We were informed there was an attack where she was staying. People come there with firearms and some of the girls were sexually assaulted. The mother was in fear that this might happen to Ruth as well," King said.

He said little did the family know that her moving back home would later lead to her death. 
  
"That is the one thing we never saw coming because we thought we were trying to save her life but there were criminals waiting for her in Lusikisiki," he said.

Ruth was the only girl in the family, and they have described her passing as a great loss.
