JOHANNESBURG - Roads near the African National Congress (ANC)'s Luthuli House headquarters are closed off to traffic due to a demonstration by the party’s Youth League.
The group, calling for an end to unemployment, will head to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) to hand over a memorandum in Sandton.
The league wants an inclusive economy involving young people.
Thousands of young people, desperately seeking employment opportunities, have joined in on the ANC Youth League’s march to the JSE offices in Sandton.
Tenyani Lekaota, a Youth League supporter, said it's unfair that only a fraction of young South Africans are economically active.
"The JSE has failed because it’s not using its resources effectively. Had they invested in the youth, a lot of us would be employed."
Meanwhile, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers are on the scene to ensure the Youth League’s march proceeds without chaos.
Marshalls have also been appointed to guide the marchers on the road.
