JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane said that its national leadership should "reflect" on its continued participation in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

This follows the election of ActionSA councillor, Nasiphi Moya, as Tshwane mayor

Moya replaced DA councillor, Cilliers Brink, who held the mayorship for 18 months before being removed through an African National Congress (ANC)-sponsored motion of no confidence.

DA Tshwane spokesperson, Kwena Moloto, said that the ANC's actions in the capital city did not resemble those of an ally.

"I think, as a party, we are also going to have to reflect on our place in the GNU. The past few months in the GNU, we have seen the ANC remove two DA mayors in the Western Cape and now in the capital city. It seems that the ANC we made an agreement with at national level is no longer the ANC that's in control and calling the shots."

Meanwhile, ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, said that the DA made unreasonable demands during the negotiations.

"The ANC has tried to bring on board all the parties to cooperate in forming a functional, viable and inclusive government of local unity in Tshwane but a (Cilliers) Brink or nothing approach will never work."

Bhengu-Motsiri said that ActionSA's working relationship with the ANC was not dependent on Moya being elected as mayor.
