TSHWANE - The Tshwane municipal council is set to elect a new mayor on Wednesday.
For over a week now, the capital city has been without an executive government following the removal of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, Cilliers Brink, through a motion of no confidence.
Parties represented in the Tshwane council negotiated late into Tuesday night on forming a new government in the metro.
The African National Congress (ANC) is set to play a critical role in the formation of the next executive government in Tshwane.
The ANC has to make a decision on a coalition partner between two competing parties – ActionSA and the DA.
ActionSA and the ANC have recently developed a relationship, with the parties helping each other to occupy the Speaker and mayor positions in Johannesburg respectively.
Meanwhile, the DA is hoping its relationship with the ANC in the Government of National Unity (GNU) can trickle down to local governments.
ActionSA said its councillor and the current acting mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, was the most qualified to lead the metro, while the DA said it would not enter into any deal that doesn’t see Brink return to the mayor’s office.
At the same time, the ANC in Tshwane is contemplating fielding its own mayoral candidate as the biggest party in the city.
