CAPE TOWN - Cellphone evidence shows that a police protection unit stationed at slain top cop Charl Kinnear's home prevented at least three attacks on the high-ranking police officer in 2019.
The evidence, which forms part of the trial against alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, was presented in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday.
Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges for various crimes, including the murder of Kinnear in September 2020.
Evidence against co-accused, Amaal Jantjies, shows that she made contact with at least three gunmen in November 2019 to attack Kinnear, allegedly on behalf of Modack.
On two occasions gunmen were ready to fire "warning shots" at Kinnear's house in Bishop Lavis while a third attempt involved a botched hand grenade attack, which was foiled by the police on duty.
Judge Robert Henney confirmed Modack's alleged involvement with the State's witness, Hawks officer, Captain Trevor Shaw, in court on Tuesday.
"And then she tried to engage his services to do the shooting, according to her, at the behest of Mister Modack, at the property or shoot at Mister Kinnear."
The trial will continue on Wednesday, with the State set to produce more evidence against Jantjies and Modack.
