PRETORIA - ActionSA councillor Dr Nasiphi Moya has on Wednesday been elected as the new mayor of the City of Tshwane metropolitan municipality.
Moya was up against her predecessor and Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor - Cilliers Brink - for the top position.
Moya received 122 votes, while Brink only managed to get 86. No spoilt ballots were recorded.
She becomes the fourth mayor of the capital city since the 2021 local government elections.
Her election also means the end of DA-led governance in Tshwane.
Since 2016, the capital city has been governed by DA-led coalitions.
The ANC’s Gauteng secretary - Thembinkosi Nciza - said the eight years with the DA at the helm of the capital city had been disastrous.
"We are soldiering on with parties that have felt the pain for the last eight years of the Democratic [Alliance] rule in Tshwane. The people of Tshwane have been under serious oppression, but also they have been neglected."
He added the incoming government had a responsibility to repay the faith shown in them Tshwane residents.

SERVICE DELIVERY IS FOREMOST FOR MOYA
Moya has asked councillors in the capital city to put the politics of the past behind and get to work.
In her first speech to the Tshwane Council, the incoming mayor said all councillors should remember they were elected by the people to serve them.
“It is not lost on me the anxiety and the political instability that has plagued this city. My vow is to end that cycle of uncertainty and bring stability to the city we all call home.”
Moya says she’s under no delusion about the massive task before her.
“I am not here to continue the assigning of blame and political point scoring I am here to commit to you that while our city has suffered some setbacks and is under financial strain that we as councillors in this council can claw it back."
BRINK OFFERS MOYA CONDITIONAL SUPPORT
Meanwhile, the DA has warned the incoming government in Tshwane not to reverse the progress of its previous administrations.
Moya’s predecessor and now leader of the opposition party - Brink - has wished her well, saying her success will be positive for the residents of Tshwane.
“If she continues with the programme of action devised by the previous administration, as landed in the mayoral charters. If she continues with the Hammanskraal water project initiated by the previous government.
“If her government continues with the steps taken against those implicated in the Rooiwal tender, against the contractors who walked off-site, if she does these things and preserves the integrity of the administration, the DA will support her.”
