CAPE TOWN - Western Cape provincial commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, has condemned the alleged involvement of seven South African Police Service (SAPS) members in extortion.
This after seven public order police members were arrested on Sunday for allegedly extorting money from two shops in Milnerton.
Police spokesperson, Andre Traut, said that the seven police officials, aged between 24 and 43, were expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
"The Western Cape provincial commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, has condemned the involvement of SAPS members who allegedly committed extortion-related crime over the weekend in the strongest terms possible."
Traut said the members allegedly took an undisclosed amount of cash from two Chinese shop owners for protection money.
"After the incident was reported to police, members of the anti-corruption unit and provincial detectives acted swiftly and apprehended the suspects in Milnerton while they were on duty."
Traut said more suspects would be arrested as the investigation unfolds.
