CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said that the provincial government's plan to address unemployment was at an advanced stage.
This after hundreds of demonstrators led by Cosatu marched to the provincial legislature and Parliament on Monday to hand over a memorandum of demands.
Among their demands, protesters have called on government to address unemployment, poverty, inequality, corruption and the worsening high rate of crime.
Winde said that the issues raised by COSATU and other trade unions, such as FEDUSA and NEHAWU, were genuine concerns that required a collective effort.
"I would like to say I'm happy that COSATU has taken up the unemployed space in our province, and so I share many of the concerns that they have been raising about low economic growth, about high unemployment rate, about high levels of crime and reduce poverty."
