Capetonians are praising the bravery of Brandon Janeka, who swam into turbulent waters over the weekend to rescue a woman from drowning as soaring temperatures drew thousands to the coastline.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Table View Beach, an area known for its strong rip currents and located outside the designated swimming zones at Big Bay and Milnerton, where lifeguards are stationed.
Janeka recalls feeling a powerful pull as he entered the water with his family.
"When I got to the beach, it was a bit weird how the waves were moving."

Initially, the woman appeared to be floating, leading many to believe she was swimming.
However, when Janeka noticed the incoming waves and realised she hadn’t moved for some time, he knew she was in distress.
First making sure he was safe, he began strategising how to rescue her and successfully got her back to safety.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has lauded Janeka's actions, calling him a hero.
"She was laying there for about 10 minutes and no one wanted to do anything. I thought to myself that I can't just let a human being die like that."
