CAPE TOWN - One of Cape Town’s favourite sons has revisited an old high school rival in Wynberg.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi joined the cheer squad of Wynberg Boys High on Monday.
The Grey PE old-boy says it was the distinctly Cape Town flavour to a quintessential war cry of the all-boys school that prompted the visit.
It was this old school custom that took South Africa’s double World Cup-winning captain back to his high school days.
“Hoya, Hoya!”
The battle cry is traditionally chanted during school sport events to psyche players up.
The cheer squad of Wynberg Boys High recently went viral when their Bok-inspired rendition of the roaring war cry.
It was enough to get Kolisi back out on the school field he last graced during a Grey PE and Wynberg Boys derby.
“I asked the school, we saw the video they did. It was amazing. We wanted to come earlier but we had to finish the rugby championship.”
The boys scripted the war cry to inspire a Springbok win over the All Blacks in Cape Town for the 2024 Freedom Cup.
Captain Kolisi admits it did just that: “Hoya! Hoya!”
