JOHANNESBURG - Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) hopeful Judge Elizabeth Baartman has been questioned on her judgements taken on appeal that have been overturned successfully.

Baartman was the first candidate to field tough questions before the Judicial Service Commission on Monday - the first day of JSC interviews to fill vacancies in various courts.

Over 50 candidates will take the hot seat before the commissioners over the next two weeks.

Judge Baartman has been on the bench in the Western Cape High Court for 15 years and has had several acting stints in the Supreme Court.

While several commissioners fired questions at her on criticisms made by the general council of the bar on the judgements she has made, the JSC's chairperson - Chief Justice Mandisa Maya - brought to the fore how 18 of Baartman's judgements have been taken on appeal and 10 were overturned successfully.

At the end of her interview, the Chief Justice commended Judge Baartman for her tenacity having appeared before the commission for a fourth time with the hope of taking a seat at the Supreme Court.
