JOHANNESBURG -The community of Naledi in Soweto is rallying amid a suspected poisoning incident that claimed the lives of five children.

The victims, aged between six and ten, died on Sunday after allegedly consuming chips from a spaza shop on Tlhatlhane Street in Soweto.

Last year in October, two boys died after consuming snacks from a spaza shop in the same area.

Monica Sebetwane was one of five children from Naledi in Soweto, who died on Sunday after all displaying similar symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and frothing at the mouth after allegedly consuming chips from a nearby spaza shop.

Huddling around his wife and sister, her father, Joseph Sebetwane, explained how his six-year-old daughter gave up on life and went limp in his arms.

"I picked her up and I saw foam coming out of her mouth, I took her outside, helping her to wipe her nose and everything and I saw her giving up, her body went limp and everything - just like that."

He said he had to book an Uber to take them to the hospital as the ambulance would take 45 minutes.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the little girl had already died.
