JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) will host an interfaith prayer and candlelight vigil in a powerful show of solidarity with Palestine, marking one of the deadliest years in the Middle East region’s history.

The vigil, led by ANC Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane, will pay tribute to the 42,000 Palestinian civilians who lost their lives between October 2023 and October 2024.

Faith leaders, civic organisations, and community activists will address the event, highlighting the devastating humanitarian toll of the conflict and South Africa’s continued call for justice and peace.

As a country with a legacy of struggle, South Africa has consistently supported the Palestinian cause, with the ANC calling for an end to the violence and oppression.

Sunday’s vigil serves not only as a moment of reflection but as a reaffirmation of the ANC’s stance on human rights and its call for global action to end the suffering in Palestine.

The party has urged the nation to unite in prayer for the innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
