CAPE TOWN - The Association for the Advancement of Wilgenhof Residents said Stellenbosch University is being punitive towards students over past events.
Wilgenhof made news headlines earlier in 2024, after disturbing items related to previous initiation ceremonies and alleged racism were found in its archives.
The university's council recently decided to close Wilgenhof and create a new, reimagined male residence.

However, the Wilgenhof association this week approached the Western Cape High Court for an urgent interdict to restrain the university from implementing its decision.
Association spokesperson Noelani King Conradie said the university was being punitive towards current Wilgenhof residents for incidents that happened in the past.
“In no way is the university’s decision fair, proportional or rational. From a number of affidavits by current students, it is clear that they have never felt threatened or hurt on a physical or emotional level by anyone or any practice.”
Stellenbosch University confirmed receipt of the court application, saying it will respond after thoroughly considering it.
