DURBAN - A KwaZulu-Natal police officer has been arrested for theft and fraud.

It's alleged he stole a bank card from a hijacked car.

The constable from Cato Manor was called to a crime scene where a hijacked vehicle was recovered in Malvern last month.

He was then ordered to head to the Malvern Police Station to complete some paperwork.

It's alleged that this is when the officer stole the bank card from the car.

He was nabbed on Friday morning with a bank card, belonging to the owner of the car, in his possession.

“The constable was arrested after he was found in possession of a bank card which belongs to the owner of the vehicle which was hijacked during the incident in question," said Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said the officer will appear in court on Monday.

“As such, the officer will be charged with theft and fraud for using the card and he will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 October 2024.”

Meanwhile, the Community Safety Department in KwaZulu-Natal has lauded the arrest of the police officer.

According to the department, the incident has dented the image of police officers.

“This is a conduct which we do not expect to see in the police services, and it has no place in the province of KwaZulu-Natal hence I am commending that you have done the joint operation to track down this conduct. In KwaZulu-Natal we don’t have a space for criminal elements, especially from the police force," said Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli.
