CAPE TOWN - A suspected human trafficker is behind bars after being arrested in Kraaifontein.
The Hawks, along with Department of Home Affairs officials and other law enforcement agencies, swooped on a residence in the area, where a woman alleged to be involved in human trafficking was arrested.
Four people, initially believed to be victims, were also taken from the house.
Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said the woman’s arrest stems from an investigation that started earlier in 2024.
Hani said police discovered the suspect had trafficked a victim from Nigeria for sexual exploitation.
"Preliminary investigation and interviews by social workers discovered that the four possible victims are not trafficking-in-persons victims but are illegally in South Africa."
Hani said they have since been charged with contravention of the Immigration Act.
"The alleged trafficker is due to appear in the Kuilsriver Magistrates Court on Friday, 4 October 2024, for a charge of trafficking in persons and contravention of the Immigration Act."
Hani said the four suspects will be appearing in the same court.
