JOHANNESBURG - Joburg law enforcement officers are urging the public to remain vigilant along Grayston Drive and surrounding roads in Sandton.

This follows a spate of smash-and-grab incidents where motorists were robbed in bumper-to-bumper traffic ahead of the Redbull F1 Showrun on Sunday.

Several smash-and-grab incidents have been reported along Grayston Drive following road closures contributing to high traffic volumes.

"Unfortunately, the threat of smash-and-grab incidents has become a concerning reality in our community. Through high visibility and inconspicuous patrol, JMPD [Johannesburg Metro Police Department] officers are monitoring areas of concern such as Grayston Drive in Sandton," said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

He said motorists should consider the following to safeguard themselves.

"Lock your doors and roll up your windows even if stopped for a short time, keep your doors locked. Minimise distractions while driving, such as using your phone or eating and don’t leave valuables in plain sight, keep your belongings out of sight, even if you are leaving your car for a short time."

The City of Joburg has also cautioned motorists to remain vigilant.
