CAPE TOWN - The Association for the Advancement of Wilgenhof Residents has approached the courts to prevent Stellenbosch University from closing the controversial men's residence.
Wilgenhof made headlines earlier this year after disturbing items related to previous initiation ceremonies and alleged racism were found in its archives.
The university's council recently made a decision to close the student accommodation to create a new, reimagined male residence.
However, the Wilgenhof association wants the Western Cape High Court to grant an urgent interdict to stop the university from implementing its decision.
Member of the association, Professor Nicola Theron: "The university has a burden of care towards our sons. Because of the university's actions, these students have been ostracised, portrayed as racists and even rapists. This is all without a single shred of evidence. It is difficult to imagine that they will be accepted in other residences."
