Snow in spring is not unusual - SA Weather Service

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said that the recent snowfall experienced in parts of the country was not unusual.

KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape have experienced two bouts of icy weather over the last two weekends.

The first heavy snowfall last week resulted in travellers being stuck on the N3 between Joburg and Durban, where two people died from hypothermia.

Speaking during a briefing on Tuesday morning, forecaster Christien Engelbrecht said that snow in spring was nothing new.

"In some areas on the N3 up to 80cm of snow, that is quite rare. I think the impact is one of the snow events with one of the largest impacts in what we can recall now, but in terms of the time of the year the event occurred, that is not unusual."
