JOHANNESBURG - Police are on the hunt for a gang of jewellery robbers who stormed Winifred Mandela Precinct, formerly known as Nicolway Mall, in Bryanston on Monday afternoon.

The gang made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery from Bryanston Jewellers, firing several shots in the mall as bystanders ducked for cover.

Police are appealing for public assistance with any information that may lead to the arrest of the gang of jewellery robbers who pulled off the heist.

"The suspects reportedly fired gunshots before fleeing the scene using two vehicles, a red Nissan and a grey Hyundai sedan. No one has been reported injured from the shots, and the suspects are still at large," said police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

An eyewitness, Jason Harter, said one of the bullets was fired into his store.

"One of them fired a dispersed shot. It went into my store and hit my ceiling. Yet ironically, based on the angle, it doesn’t make sense how it didn’t hit any glass. So, we are trying to determine whether it was a ricochet or not."

Police are probing a case of business robbery.
