Labour Dept vows to continue workplace inspections to ensure compliance with laws

PRETORIA - The Department of Labour has vowed to continue with inspections at different places of work to monitor compliance with labour laws.
 
Minister Nomakhosazana Meth said that the focus would now shift to the trucking and logistics industry, following concerns over the employment of undocumented foreign nationals.
 
Meth was updating the media on Tuesday following a series of nationwide inspections in the hospitality sector.

The raids, aimed at enforcing labour laws and immigration regulations, uncovered widespread non-compliance at eateries.
 
Labour Inspector-General Aggy Moiloa said that while oversight would continue in the hospitality sector, efforts needed to shift towards the logistics sector following several complaints.
 
Moiloa said that the logistics industry had become a hotspot for violations, with businesses seeking to cut costs by hiring undocumented workers.
 
"There’s a disregard for minimum wage laws and companies are employing foreign nationals without proper documentation."
 
Moiloa added that this practice not only violated labour laws but also sidelined qualified South Africans who were struggling to find employment.
