CAPE TOWN - The Drakenstein Municipality has handed over a petition to the council's Speaker to challenge the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA)'s approval of Eskom's proposed 40% electricity tariff hike.
On Monday, Drakenstein Mayor Stephen Korabie joined Paarl residents in rainy weather conditions to march from the Huguenot train station to Drakenstein's civic centre.
Korabie said that the tariff increase, which takes effect on 1 April next year, would have a severe effect on residents who were already struggling to make ends meet.
"There are people who have to decide now whether they are going to buy utilities or whether they must buy electricity. This is what Eskom's price hike will cause within our communities."
