LUSIKISIKI - The AmaMpondo royal family said that assassinations had become a common occurrence in Lusikisiki, in the Eastern Cape, where 18 relatives were killed over the weekend.
 
The massacre has sent shockwaves across the country, with the royal family ringing the alarm on a rise of deadly violence in the rural area.
 
"Entering and assassinating people in their homes is a very common thing, especially in this community of Ngobozana and other neighbouring parts."

AmaMpondo royal family spokesperson, Prince Chulumanco Sigcau, said that the deadly attacks on people in their homes were not new in Ngobozana village and so was the brutal killing of women.
 
"On the side of the murders of women in such a brutal manner of gunshot and killing by knives, it is also prominent. I can mention three women from this area of this village who have been assassinated brutally in that regard."
 
Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha said that the province had seen a number of similar incidents but police had made significant breakthroughs in that regard.
 
He said that police would soon find the motive behind this massacre as well.
 
"Well there has been such incidents including in Gqeberha and Nelson Mandela and I am quite happy that in all of those, police have effected arrests in all of those. Some of the culprits are in prison, that is why are confident with the work that is being done by SAPS. A breakthrough will be secured."
 
Days after the incident, police say they are yet to determine to motive behind the mass murder.
