PRETORIA - Embattled Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink said he is in a fighting mood ahead of a motion of no confidence against him on Thursday.

The African National Congress (ANC) sponsored the motion in the region, citing service delivery had deteriorated in the capital under Brink's 18 months at the helm.

The ANC has confirmed it will proceed with the motion after talks of a stability agreement with the Democratic Alliance (DA) failed on Wednesday night.

However, Brink said his party, the DA, is still open to negotiating with the ANC.

"It's very unfortunate the ANC has not withdrawn this motion. They can still do it, but the longer they take to do it, the less likely there is for a good outcome. My general feeling is one of concern for the city, but we are in a fighting mood.

“We want to protect the gains we have made. We want to cut that ribbon on the Hammanskraal water project that gives people clean water in their taps. We want to be there at each one of the milestones and celebrate the financial recovery of the city."

At the same time, the DA says voters in Tshwane will in the next elections punish the political parties responsible for removing a working government.

ActionSA will have to account to voters during the 2026 local government elections, said Brink.

“ActionSA is not driven by the interests of residents, they not driven by any kind of grievance, it doesn’t exist. It is Herman Mashaba (ActionSA President) who thinks if we do well, if we bring clean water to the people of Hammanskraal that voters won’t credit him and now he has to reinvent himself and the problem is that he is causing so much instability and chaos, and he simply doesn’t take any responsibility.”
