JOHANNESBURG - An Alberton couple have been handed life in prison for shocking acts of abuse they committed against their two-year-old daughter and, ultimately, killing her.
The High Court sitting in Palm Ridge in June found Belinda and Stefanus Bezuidenhout guilty of abusing, raping and murdering their little girl, Chane Bezuidenhout.
They force-fed her, made her swallow her own vomit, hit her against a wall, smeared her with faeces, raped her and, in the end, throttled her to death.
They were sentenced on Thursday.
Both Belinda and Stefanus Bezuidenhout were convicted of raping their two-year-old daughter, Chane Bezuidenhout.
Belinda was also convicted of murdering her and Stefanus of being an accessory after the fact thereto, while Stefanus was also convicted of abusing her and Belinda of being an accessory after the fact there to.
The mother on Thursday received a total of two life sentences and another 20 years in total and Stefanus, one life sentence and another 25 years.
Women and Men Against Child Abuse has welcomed this outcome, saying they trust that the sentences handed down would send a strong message to would-be offenders.
