CAPE TOWN - A community activist has warned that public protests are set to flare up in various communities in Cape Town due to soaring electricity costs.
Residents of Lavender Hill took to the streets this week, blocking off Prince George Drive to protest against the rising cost of electricity.
Lavender Hill resident and community activist, Mark Schrikker, said that the protests were likely to continue.
"There is going to be peaceful protests along the road tonight. No roads will be blocked off. It will be a peaceful protest."
Schrikker said that residents in other areas were expressing similar concerns about the high cost of electricity.
"What's happening now, it's not just a Lavender Hill thing anymore. Certain Cape Flats communities came together, now it has grown and people are saying we are going to stand up in solidarity and now it's going to start flaring up everywhere."
The City of Cape Town said that its law enforcement units were on standby in case the protests flared up again.
