JOHANNESBURG - The two men convicted of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Koketso Mojatau’s murder, are due back in court on Wednesday for sentencing proceedings.
City of Ekurhuleni councillor, Mojatau and Siboniso Sokhele were both killed in a hijacking in Katlehong in April 2023.
The High Court in Joburg subsequently found Simon Mahuse and Frans Ntshumayelo guilty of murder as well as of a string of violent crimes committed over a three-month period, from January to April 2023.
Police tracked the suspects in the case down to Phumula, on the back of a tip-off from members of the community.
There was an exchange of fire and one was shot and killed, while another managed to escape.
Mahuse and Ntshumayelo were, however, arrested, charged with, and ultimately convicted of a string of offences, including attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
During the trial, the court heard how they had accosted unsuspecting victims at gunpoint and stole their vehicles, cellphones and other personal belongings.
They were found guilty in July and the case was postponed to Wednesday for sentencing.
