CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Indigenous Games festival kicked off on Tuesday in celebration of our collective heritage.

MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, officially opened the three-day festival, which runs from 24 to 26 September at the Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River.

The event sees district teams from across the province competing in various indigenous games, including dibeke, drie-stokkies, jukskei and morabaraba, among others.

Mackenzie said that there were over 700 participants from all over the province.

"The Western Cape Indigenous Games festival is bringing people together so that they can understand the games their ancestors played. Our forefathers played these games hundreds of years ago for social inclusion and getting together as communities."
