JOHANNESBURG - Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) successfully contained and extinguished a fire in Jeppestown Saturday night.
The blaze broke out in a one-story building at the intersection of Anderson and Maritzburg Streets, which was filled with illegally erected shacks.
EMS reports that all shacks inside were destroyed, leading to the collapse of the roof.
One person suffered minor injuries and has been taken to the hospital, while 18 were displaced.
In light of the ongoing cold front, EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo urged residents to exercise caution with heating devices.
“There is no information whether the Building was abandoned or hijacked. EMS is cautioning residents of Johannesburg to take care of all heating and cooking devices as the cold front slowly retreats.”
