JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng’s Health Department is prepared for any fire-related injuries stemming from the province's severe weather.
Saturday, a devastating fire in the cemetery view informal settlement in Pretoria destroyed over 800 shacks, displacing nearly 3,000 residents.
Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to Steve Biko Academic and Mamelodi Regional Hospitals.
Tragically, one adult lost their life, and a woman suffered a miscarriage en route to the hospital.
Acting department spokesperson Khutso Rabothata says the department is urging residents to exercise caution with heating devices:
"The department remains on high alert due to fire risks from the current weather and communities are urged to stay safe and avoid open fires. MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko praised the dedication of front-line responders, whose efforts reflect the Gauteng Department of Health’s “I serve with a smile” campaign, even amidst challenging circumstances."
