Family says Darlington 'Papa G' Michaels death left a huge void

JOHANNESBURG - The great-grandson of veteran actor Darlington Michaels said that his passing has left a significant void in the family.
Michaels, aged 78, died last week after a brief battle with cancer.

On Saturday, crowds of mourners gathered at Uncle Tom's Community Centre in Soweto to pay their final respects to the legendary performer.
Known to millions as "Papa G" for his iconic role as a flamboyant gangster on the soap opera Isidingo, Michaels' decades-long career on South African TV and film made him a household name.
His great-grandson, Dintle, said that his loss is a profound one for the Michaels family.
"He is the country's hero, If I could say so myself. He has done a lot for the screens that we have watched. At home, he was the guy that was always there for everyone."
